Dividing disk space is known as disk partitioning. For partitioning purpose, we divide one physical hard drive into separate volumes.

Generally, hard disk drives come from factory with only one partition and shows one drive on your computer upon plugging in. Often, having a single drive limit the usefulness. For efficiency, you have to keep your windows file and other OS specific data separate in one single drive.

Separate partitions for Windows files and other data have a few advantages. If you create a separate partition on your hard drive, your computer will handle these partitions as individual entities. Keeping your data separate from the system drive (where windows is located), will provide an easier way to back up and lesser the chance of losing your valuable data.

You can create a separate partition by using third-party software, but that can be expensive in some cases. No need to worry, Microsoft already has included a Disk Management tool in Windows that will come to our help in this article.

You will need administrator access to create partitions or volume on hard disk. For creating a new partition, hard disk should have unallocated disk space or free disk space on the main disk drive. In case of not having any, you can create some by deleting a partition.

A few steps are required if you want to partition your hard drive, don’t forget to backup your files in case something will go wrong!

  • At first, you have to open Computer Management. For this, click on the Start menu and go to Control Panel, now click on System and Security, then click on Administrative Tools. After that, open Computer Management. If your computer asks for Administrator password, provide administrator credentials.
  • Now, look at the left panel, there should be an option of Disk Management under Storage.
  • Click on Next in the New Simple Volume Wizard.
  • Now, enter the size of the volume you want to create. The size should be in megabytes. After entering the desired size for partition, click on Next.
  • Choose a letter for the partition or keep it default and click next.
  • It will eventually ask you to Format the created partition. Click next on the Format Partition dialog box to format partition. You can also choose Do not format this volume to format the volume letter.  Warning: This will erase any data on the part selected!
  • Click Finish to close the Wizard.

Format a Partition

If you choose Do not format this volume during partition creation process, you are unable to use created partition before you format it. So a format should be needed for further usage of unformatted drive.

To format a partition:

  • Open the Computer Management.
  • Now, look at the left pane, there should be an option Disk Management under Storage.
  • Right click on the created partition to format it, and then click on Format.

  • In the Format dialog box, click OK, and then click OK again to format the partition with default setting.
